God is the One who girds me with strength and makes my way blameless.
Girding is an image of readiness. A person would fasten the belt for work or for war. David says that God is the One who prepares him with strength and makes his way firm. He does not separate ability from direction. The Lord not only gives strength, but also sets the path in order. This is important, because strength without the right direction can be destructive. The believer needs both ability and guidance. God’s grace strengthens us for the work to which He calls us and teaches us to walk rightly in it. “To make blameless” here does not mean that David’s life became without hardships. It means a steady path that fits the purpose. When the Lord leads, even trials can serve maturity. The believer should ask not only for much strength, but also for wisdom to use it in accordance with God’s will.
