The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my Deliverer, my God, my cliff in whom I take refuge, my shield, the horn of my salvation and my high tower.
David sets several images side by side, because one word is not enough to describe God’s protection. The rock is stability, the fortress is safety, the shield is close protection, the high tower is a secure place that stands above the enemy. The “horn of salvation” is an image of strength and victory. All these names are personal: “my.” David is not speaking only about general theology, but about the Lord whom he has come to know through his own experience. The believer likewise can know God through Holy Scripture and, in the trials of life, understand more deeply the value of these names. These images do not promise the absence of danger. A fortress is needed precisely because there is war. To rely on God means to find refuge in danger in His character, promises, and presence. He not only gives protection, but He Himself is our protection.
