By You I run against a troop, and by my God I pass over a wall.
David moves from former weakness to the strength he received from God. He is able to do what would have been impossible by his own power. Advancing against an army and crossing over a wall are images of great obstacles that are hard to overcome. The main emphasis of the verse is on the words “by You” and “by my God.” David does not exalt his own heroism, but the ability and strength he received from God. For the believer, this does not mean that God will necessarily accomplish every great goal he desires. God’s power is given in order to live according to His will and to carry out the work entrusted by Him. When the Lord assigns a task, He can also give the strength and ability needed for it. This verse keeps the believer from two extremes: relying purely on one’s own strength and despair. He does not trust only in his own abilities, but he also does not fall into inactivity. By relying on God, a person can boldly do what the Lord has entrusted to him.
