David’s song of great deliverance begins not with a story of war, but with a confession of love. The title “My strength” shows that he does not consider his own ability to be the source of his victories. After many years of dangers, the first response of his heart is love toward the Lord. This is a sign of spiritual maturity: moving from the gift received to the Giver. The believer also can love God not only because of what He gives, but because of who He is. Difficulties sometimes reveal our true refuge. When human strength is exhausted and the Lord preserves us, His strength is no longer only an idea, but a lived reality. This short verse is the key to the whole psalm: deliverance is turned into praise, and praise into personal love. The right response to God’s saving works is not only gratitude, but a deeper devotion of the heart.
