He brought me out into a spacious place. He rescued me, because He delighted in me.
After distress, David finds himself in a “spacious place.” This is an image of freedom, safety, and breathing freely. Set against the former bonds and dangers is the breadth that God opens before him. The phrase “He delighted in me” should not be understood as though David was saved because of his perfect merits. The whole flow of the psalm shows the Lord’s grace and favor toward His servant. God lovingly receives and preserves him. For the believer, this is a reminder that God’s salvation is not only bringing someone out of danger. He can also restore a person’s inner peace and joy, and give a new opportunity to live and to serve. When, after long distress, the Lord opens a way, the right response is gratitude, not self-satisfaction. Every “spacious place” in our life is also a gift of His goodness.
