David brings his case before God, confident that in this situation his request is just and that his prayer does not come from deceit. He asks in three different ways that the Lord would hear him: “hear,” “pay attention,” “listen.” This repetition shows the deep seriousness of his prayer and his great need for God’s intervention. With the words, “Listen to my prayer, which is not from deceitful lips,” David emphasizes his sincerity. He is not trying to present reality before God in a distorted way or to hide wrong motives under the cover of prayer. God cannot be deceived, because He sees not only the spoken words, but also a person’s heart and purpose. At the same time, David is not declaring that he has been innocent throughout his whole life. He asks that the Lord would examine this very matter with righteousness, and the accusations brought against him. This verse teaches the believer to entrust his case to God with sincerity, trusting His righteous judgment, and at the same time being ready for the Lord to examine his heart and motives as well. When a person is treated unjustly, his right path is not revenge, but to entrust his case to the Judge who knows the whole truth and judges with righteousness.
