Rise up, Lord, confront him and bring him down. Deliver my soul from the hand of the wicked by Your sword.
David asks for God’s decisive intervention. The words “Rise up” are a poetic appeal and do not mean that the Lord had been inactive or unaware before. David asks that God stand against his enemy, humble him, and deliver him from his hand. The phrase “with Your sword” shows God’s mighty judgment and righteous intervention. In this prayer David does not take revenge into his own hands, but entrusts his case to the Lord. This is an important principle for understanding such severe prayers. A believer may ask that God restrain violence, frustrate evil plans, and establish justice. At the same time, by Christ’s teaching he is also called to pray for his enemies and to desire their repentance. God’s intervention may be the limiting of evil, the revealing of the truth, or even the sinner’s repentance. The final aim is not personal revenge, but the establishing of God’s justice.
