He is like a lion that wants to tear apart, and like a young lion that lies in ambush in hidden places.
The image of the lion shows the enemy’s strength, persistence, and destructive intent. In particular, the phrase “lies in ambush” emphasizes not only strength, but also cunning and the waiting for a suitable moment to attack. David does not minimize the danger that threatens him. Trusting God does not mean closing one’s eyes to a threat; faith teaches a person to recognize danger with wisdom and at the same time, above all, to rely on the Lord’s protection and, as needed, to act with the wisdom He gives. The whole course of the Psalm shows that even a lion-like enemy is not stronger than God. This image also teaches the believer vigilance. Evil does not always come openly; sometimes it hides and waits for the right moment. David speaks in the circumstances of real persecution; therefore, in the face of danger the believer must combine vigilance and trust. The Lord can reveal the hidden threat and keep the one who relies on Him even when the adversary seems strong and ready to attack.
