He who lives blamelessly, does righteousness, and speaks truth in his heart.
A life that fits the Lord’s presence is described by three interconnected qualities: a blameless walk, righteous deeds, and truth in the heart. “Living blamelessly” does not mean absolute, sinless perfection, but a whole and sincere life without conscious double-mindedness. The phrase “does righteousness” shows that a person’s inner faithfulness is also expressed in his deeds. And the expression “speaks truth in his heart” refers to inner sincerity: a person does not make peace with falsehood within himself and does not try to justify himself through lies. His heart, his speech, and his conduct are in harmony with one another. It is not possible to impress God with outward piety if the heart is bound to falsehood. The believer is called to love the truth within himself, because from there flow speech and deed. Such a life is the result of God’s grace. Jesus not only forgives, but also renews a person by the Holy Spirit, so that he may walk in the paths of truth and righteousness.
