There they are terrified with fear, because God is with the generation of the righteous.
Those who lived as if God does not exist finally meet His real presence. In that moment, self-confidence turns into fear. The phrase “they are terrified with fear” shows the collapse of human arrogance before God’s judgment. Especially significant is the reason given: “God is with the generation of the righteous.” The lawless thought that the oppressed people were abandoned, but in reality the Lord was with them. God’s presence does not mean that the righteous will never suffer. The psalm speaks precisely about an environment of oppression. It means that suffering does not cancel God’s covenant faithfulness, and evil has no final victory. The believer may feel few in number, weak, or unprotected, but his true strength is the Lord’s presence. At the same time, this word is a call to holy fear: we must take God’s presence into account more than people’s power or approval.
