So that You may bring justice for the orphan and the oppressed, so that man, who is from the earth, may no longer persecute him.
The psalm ends with confidence in God’s righteous intervention. He brings judgment for the orphan and the oppressed, so that mortal man will no longer persecute and terrorize them. The expression “man who is from the earth” reminds us of the oppressor’s limitation and transience. He may consider himself strong and invincible, yet he remains an earthly creature. God’s judgment restores justice and delivers the oppressed or the poor from the rule of fear. For the Christian, this is hope that violence and terror have no final place. God will defend the oppressed and will restrain the strength of the evildoer. At the same time, this word is a warning to each of us: never to become for others a source of fear or oppression. The authority, speech, and influence given to a person must be used not to crush the weak, but to serve and protect them.
