Psalm 10:17

Lord, You have heard the desire of the poor. You will strengthen their heart and will listen to their prayer.

God hears the desire of the poor. Here the poor is not only the one who has material need, but also the one who humbly recognizes his powerlessness and dependence on the Lord and entrusts his need to Him. Here the poor also resembles the “poor in spirit” mentioned by Christ, who recognize their need before God and rely entirely on Him (Matthew 5:3). The Lord not only hears, but also strengthens their heart. When outward deliverance has not yet come, God can strengthen a person inwardly by giving patience, courage, and confidence. The phrase “You will give ear to their prayer” shows God’s attentive and favorable hearing. A Christian can be sure that sincere prayer is not lost. The answer may not come immediately or in the way we imagine, but God hears and acts in His wisdom. This verse also shows the effect of prayer: the Lord not only changes circumstances, but also prepares and strengthens the heart of the one who prays. Humble waiting itself is the work of His grace.
