Why does the wicked person despise God and say in his heart, “You will not investigate”?
The wicked despises God because he is convinced that he will not bear responsibility. The words “You will not examine” mean that, in his view, God will not uncover the evil schemes that have been carried out or are about to be carried out, and will not demand an account for them. This conviction allows him to continue doing evil without fear. The psalmist’s question exposes the absurdity of this way of thinking. The righteous God cannot ignore injustice forever. His patience is an opportunity for repentance, not the absence of judgment. For the believer, this is a reminder that every choice carries responsibility: God sees everything and will demand an account. The same truth also comforts the one who suffers. The oppressor cannot escape the Lord’s examination forever. Therefore the Christian must renounce revenge and entrust his case to the righteous Judge, while also praying for the sinner’s repentance (Matthew 5:44).
