Therefore the wicked will not stand in the time of judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
This verse reveals the serious side of the first psalm: God’s righteous judgment. The phrase “will not stand” means that the wicked will not be able to justify themselves or remain firm before God’s holy presence. Their self-confidence will collapse, because no false excuse will endure the Lord’s true examination. “The assembly of the righteous” first refers to the fellowship of God’s faithful people, yet in its full sense it points to the final gathering of the saved. This does not teach that in the earthly church there is never a sinful or hypocritical person. At present, within the visible community, true believers and merely outward believers can be together. At the final judgment, God will separate them perfectly. The verse calls us not to rely only on religious affiliation, but to repent and, by faith, rely on God’s grace. Before Christ, no one will be justified by personal merits. In the assembly of the righteous stand those whom God justifies by faith and renews by His Spirit (Romans 5:1).
