Blessed are the peacemakers, because they will be called sons of God.
In this saying Jesus pours out blessing on those who not only love peace, but also establish it in their life and in their surroundings. “Peacemakers” are those who strive to remove hostility, reconcile those who are divided, and bring harmony where there is quarrel or intolerance. The peace they bring is not merely a purely conscious agreement between people, but a condition of the heart, born from peace with God and from divine love. People who carry divine love within themselves, without intending it, become spreaders of that love in their surroundings, and therefore become those who establish peace. Here Christ shows that to be a peacemaker means to act as God acts, reconciling the world to Himself in love. For this reason peacemakers are called “sons of God,” because they bear their Father’s nature: peace, love, and mercy. This saying teaches that a true believer not only avoids disputes, but also, by his presence and actions, spreads God’s peace among people.
