Matthew 5:6

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be satisfied.

This saying refers to those who, in spirit, long for God’s righteousness the way the body longs for bread and water. Hunger and thirst here symbolize a deep desire to know and to do God’s will. These people are not satisfied with outward piety, but want their whole being to be filled with truth, faith, and holiness. Jesus says that they will be satisfied, that is, their souls will be filled with divine peace and contentment, because God Himself is their food and their fullness. This saying teaches that true happiness is given to those “hearts” that do not grow full of seeking righteousness and live with a longing to be near God. The world is hungry for what is material, but the believer for righteousness, and it is this very hunger that brings the soul to fullness.
