Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Here the expression “poor in spirit” does not refer to material poverty, but to spiritual humility and complete dependence on God. “Poor in spirit” people are those who realize that by their own strength they cannot attain God’s perfect will, and who recognize and confess their imperfection and sinfulness. They understand that they are fully dependent on God in every aspect of their life, and that without His help they cannot carry out their spiritual growth or live a full life. With such humility they draw near to God, understanding that only He grants them true meaning, purpose, and hope. Jesus promises that “the kingdom of heaven” belongs to such people. This means that God’s presence, power, and salvation are especially revealed in the lives of those who humbly rely on God and realize that without Him they are nothing.
