But I say to you: do not resist the evil one, but whoever slaps your right cheek, turn the other to him as well.
Here Jesus teaches the law of love and patience, setting it against human vengeance. “Do not resist the evil one” does not mean accepting injustice or refusing to take steps for the sake of truth, but rather not answering evil with evil, not taking revenge, and not giving oneself over to hatred. “Turn the other cheek” symbolizes forgiveness and inner peace, when a person overcomes an offense with love and patience rather than with force. Jesus shows that true victory comes not through retaliation, but by breaking the chain of sin and evil. This word is a call to renounce revenge and answering evil with evil, so that a person does not lose his spiritual dignity—peace, purity, love—and so that he allows God to be the one who carries out justice.
