Matthew 3:2

And he said, Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.

This verse is the central message of John the Baptist’s preaching: a call to inner change and a turning of the heart. The word “Repent” (Greek: metanoeite) means a complete transformation of mind and life—renouncing sin and returning to God. John declares that the “Kingdom of Heaven,” that is, God’s kingdom, is no longer far away; it is near, because the time of salvation has arrived. This message is a call not only to feel remorse, but to prepare to receive the Messiah, through whom God’s presence will be established among people.
