Matthew 27:8

For this reason that field is called the Field of Blood to this day.

This statement sums up the tragic end of Judas’s story and at the same time reveals the mysterious working of divine justice. The name “Field of Blood” has a double meaning. First, it recalls the bloody price of Judas’s betrayal: the field was bought with the money for which the blood of the Innocent One was sold. Second, it symbolizes the redemption accomplished by Christ’s blood: that same “price of blood” is now turned into a resting place for foreigners, as a sign that in Him salvation is open to all. This name was preserved even in the first centuries as a living testimony to the meeting of human sin and divine mercy. The fact that the field was called that “to this day” shows that this story left a deep mark in the people’s memory. The field became a place where it was remembered how a man sold life, but God turned that very price into a mystery of life.
