When evening came, a rich man named Joseph came, who was from Arimathea and had become a disciple of Jesus.
This verse begins the account of Jesus’ burial by introducing Joseph of Arimathea, a man who until then may have remained unnoticed, yet at a decisive moment dared to come forward with open faith. He was wealthy and an honored council member (compare Mark 15:43), but his worth was measured not by possessions, but by the faith of his heart. Joseph, who “had become a disciple of Jesus,” represents the kind of believer whose faith moves him to act in a moment of danger. His coming in the evening, when the brutal events of the crucifixion had ended, shows courage and devotion to stand beside the Lord, against whom the world had passed its sentence.
