Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
This verse completes the previous scene by naming the women who remained near the cross and became living witnesses of faith. Mary Magdalene, who had been set free from seven demons (Luke 8:2), by her presence shows her deep love and gratitude toward Jesus. Mary the mother of James and Joses, and Salome the mother of the sons of Zebedee (Mark 15:40), are mentioned as women who dared to be near the cross at the moment when many had gone away. The mention of their names testifies that in God’s remembrance their faithfulness—and faithfulness in general—is kept forever. In the shadow of the cross these women became apostles of silence, who carried in their hearts the light of hope, as we will see next, becoming the first bearers of the news of the resurrection. Their presence testifies that in the kingdom of God, greatness is measured not by power, but by love and faithful service.
