Matthew 27:53

After his resurrection, coming out of the tombs, they entered the holy city and appeared to many.

This verse continues the previous one and shows that the resurrection of the saints did not happen immediately at the moment of Jesus’ death, but after His resurrection, as a living testimony that the power of death was finally defeated. Their entering the holy city and appearing to many confirmed that Christ’s resurrection was a real historical event, whose effect also extended to the saints. This episode also symbolizes the future universal resurrection, when the righteous will come out of the graves to share in the glory of God. The saints’ appearing reminds us that the death of believers is not the end, but a passage into life. Christ’s victory became a model not only of spiritual, but also of bodily rebirth.
