Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit.
This verse points to the most majestic moment when Jesus Christ willingly entrusted His spirit to the Father. The phrase “cried out with a loud voice” shows not despair, but authority: He did not die from weakness, but voluntarily gave up His spirit, as John says (John 19:30): “He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.” That cry was victorious, a sign that the work of salvation was completed; at that same moment He said, “It is finished” (John 19:30). Thus, death did not rule over Him; rather, He ruled over death, passing through it by His own will. The giving up of His spirit was not a sign of defeat, but the fulfillment of God’s saving plan.
