The robbers who were crucified with him were also insulting him in the same way.
This verse shows that the mockery and reproach toward Jesus had become widespread, reaching even the criminals crucified with Him. At first, both robbers were ridiculing Him (cf. Matt. 27:44), but later one of them repented and became a living witness of faith (Luke 23:40–43). This verse testifies to a person’s spiritual course: even at the boundary of death, a person can reject or accept Christ. The initial reproach became the prelude to repentance, showing that God’s mercy is available even to the sinner who is on the cross.
