At that time two robbers were crucified with Him, one on His right side and the other on His left.
This verse completes the picture of the crucifixion by revealing the fulfillment of prophecy: “For His person was delivered over to death, and He was counted among the lawless” (Isaiah 53:12). Christ was crucified between two robbers, showing that His saving sacrifice was directed precisely to sinners. As we will see next, the right and left sides symbolize the two human responses: one, repentance and faith; the other, rejection and mockery. This scene became an image of the world’s spiritual division, in the sense that the same Cross stands between two sinners: one finds life in it, the other condemnation. In the same way, the world to this day stands before that same choice: to know Christ, or to reject Him.
