Then, making a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and they put a reed in His right hand. Kneeling before Him, they mocked Him and said, “Greetings, King of the Jews!”
This episode is an unprecedented contrast between human mockery and divine glory: the soldiers, thinking they were ridiculing a self-proclaimed King, were in fact carrying out the deep mystery of the prophecies. The crown of thorns, as a sign of pain and humiliation, became a symbol of the spiritual kingdom, showing that Christ’s authority passes through the path of suffering. The reed, as a mocking sign of power, became the scepter of His love. The soldiers’ taunt, “Greetings, King of the Jews,” became an unwilling confession about His kingship. This scene reveals the deep meaning of human irony: people were mocking holiness, yet in that very mockery God’s saving plan was being confirmed. The crown of thorns also recalls the thorns that grew because of sin (Genesis 3:18), which are now placed on the head of the Righteous One as a sign of atonement for human sin.
