Jesus did not answer him, not even a single word, so that the governor was greatly amazed.
Pilate’s amazement and Jesus’ silence form a complete scene, where human judgment collides with divine peace. Pilate saw the many accusations and expected a word of self-defense, but Jesus kept silent, fulfilling the prophecy: “He did not open his mouth, like a lamb that is led to be slaughtered” (Isaiah 53:7). His silence did not arise from fear, but from divine authority and calm confidence toward the will of God the Father. That silence became a word by which he judged the injustice of the accusers and at the same time took upon himself their sin. Pilate’s amazement became the echo of the human conscience, standing before that Silence which carried within itself the eternal Word. This brief scene reveals the depth of divine humility: the King is judged, yet by his silence he rules over the judges.
