The chief priests and the elders accused Jesus, hoping to receive an answer that could be used as a charge, but He remained silent, expressing not fear or indifference, but the deepest authority and confidence in God’s judgment. His silence became the strongest answer to the accusations: He who was the Truth did not enter into a dispute of lies. This silence is also prophetic, as Isaiah had foretold: “He did not open his mouth, like a lamb that is led to be slaughtered” (Isaiah 53:7). That moment shows the profound mystery of Christ’s humility and complete obedience to the will of God: He is judged in place of sinners and, in silence, bears their sin.
