Jesus stood before the governor. The governor questioned him and said, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You say so.”
This scene opens Jesus’ final trial as He stands before Pilate, where the political question, “Are you the King of the Jews?”, aimed to determine whether He was a threat to Roman authority. Yet Jesus’ brief but profound reply, “You say so,” affirms His royal identity not in a worldly sense, but as the true Lord of God’s kingdom. He does not dispute the accusation, yet He also does not explain it in a way that would defend Himself, because by His silence He bears witness to the truth: He truly is King, but His kingdom is not of this world. This statement at the same time confirms the fulfillment of the prophecies: Christ is presented as the King of Peace, who by His silence conquers sin and death.
