Jesus adds another manifestation of the Pharisees’ arrogance: they loved for people to call them “Rabbi,” that is, “Teacher” or “My teacher.” This title, which at first meant respect for learning and divine wisdom, over time had been transformed into a symbol of pride. The Pharisees sought not to teach, but to make an impression. For them it was important that people recognize their position and glorify them, not God. Jesus condemns this pursuit, reminding them that divine wisdom is given for service, not for glory. Whoever loves titles and honor but forgets humility stops serving God and begins serving his own glory; thus he loses spiritual power, because God’s presence dwells not among those who seek praise, but among the humble.
