Jesus declares a prophetic verdict of judgment upon Jerusalem and the temple. “Your house” means not only the city of the people, but first of all the temple, which will no longer be a dwelling place of God’s presence. When the people rejected their Savior, the glory of God was to depart from among them, and the “house” was to remain empty and in ruins. This word was fulfilled historically in AD 70, when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and the temple. But the saying also has a spiritual meaning: it reminds us that when a person or a people rejects God’s presence, even the holiest place becomes an empty building. God’s presence gives life its value, and without Him even the most beautiful “house” becomes a ruin.
