So you yourselves testify about yourselves that you are sons of those who killed the prophets.
Jesus draws a logical conclusion from their words: they condemn themselves. By their words they acknowledged the deeds of their fathers, not realizing that by those words they confirmed their own identity. By declaring that their ancestors killed the prophets, they indirectly confess that their root and spirit are the same—that they are their sons not only by flesh, but also by conduct. This statement again shows Jesus’ prophetic wisdom: He does not accuse without proof, but turns their own words into testimony against them. The Pharisees tried by words to separate themselves from sinners, but through the blindness of their hearts they testified that they are heirs of the same hatred.
