Matthew 23:21

And whoever swears by the temple swears both by the temple and by the One who dwells in it.

Jesus shows that every oath, if it is made by something connected with holiness, is in fact directed to God Himself. The temple is holy not because of its stones, but because God dwells there. Therefore, whoever swears by the temple swears by the very presence of God. The Pharisees, trying to introduce degrees of holiness, seemed to have forgotten that holiness flows entirely from God and from His presence. This word confirms a foundational truth: everything that is connected with God involves Him Himself. By this Jesus emphasizes the whole nature of faith, that there is no “partial or selective obligation” toward God.
