Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples and said,
The beginning of this chapter shows that Jesus’ word was directed not only to the disciples, but also to all the people. He now speaks openly, without parables or hints, and publicly exposes the hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees. This again bears witness to the authority of His teaching: He does not fear the religious leaders, but stands before the people as the true Teacher, who reveals the true meaning of the law. This introduction prepares Jesus’ next words, in which He will condemn hypocritical faith and false piety that were distorting the people’s spiritual life. His word is at the same time an admonition, addressed to all who followed the outward form but inwardly did not have faith.
