So if David calls Him “Lord,” then how is the Christ his son?”
This question of Jesus becomes a silencing judgment for the Pharisees. If David, being guided by the Holy Spirit, calls the Messiah “Lord,” then it is clear that He cannot be merely David’s heir in an earthly sense. Thus, Jesus shows that the Messiah is at the same time David’s Son according to the flesh and David’s Lord according to divinity. That is, one may conclude that Christ is both man and God at the same time. The Pharisees recognized only the Messiah’s human origin, expecting a political leader, but Jesus reveals the divine messianic authority that surpasses all earthly limits. His question shows that without faith it is impossible to understand the depth of the prophecies: Scripture is opened only to those who accept the divinity of Christ.
