“The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand until I place your enemies as a footstool for your feet” (Ps. 110:1).
Jesus quotes Psalm 110:1 to show that the Messiah is not only a human king, but God’s pre-existent Son. David, filled with the Holy Spirit, speaks about the coming Messiah and calls Him “Lord,” acknowledging His divine supreme authority. If David calls the Messiah Lord, then He cannot be merely David’s descendant, an ordinary man. The phrase “The Lord said to my Lord” shows a heavenly dialogue between God the Father and the Son, where the Father invites the Son to sit at His right hand as a sign of authority, honor, and eternal reign. “Until I put your enemies as a footstool for your feet” means that Christ will overcome evil, death, and all powers that oppose God’s will. This passage reveals Christ’s twofold nature, human and divine: He is from David’s line by genealogy, yet He is Lord by essence. With these words and those of the next verse, Jesus reveals to the Pharisees the greatest truth: that the Messiah is God’s eternal and supreme Son.
