In a symbolic sense, this verse can be interpreted as follows: the king, representing God, sends his servants—representing the prophets and the apostles—to invite people to the heavenly wedding, the feast of salvation and grace. Yet those who were invited, that is, the people of Israel, refuse to come, showing disobedience, indifference, and spiritual deafness. This refusal reveals the freedom of the human will, which can also despise God’s mercy. Through this image it is made clear that God’s grace is given in love, but it is not forced. Each person is free either to accept or to reject His invitation.
