And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Lev. 19:18, Matt. 5:43).
Jesus, continuing, adds the second commandment by quoting from Leviticus (Lev. 19:18). It shows that love toward God is inseparable from love toward a person. If the first commandment concerns the vertical relationship between a person and God, then the second concerns the horizontal relationship between a person and his neighbor. To love your neighbor “as yourself” means to have the same care, forgiveness, and kindness that you would show toward yourself. Thus, Jesus shows that true faith cannot be limited only to love toward God; it is necessarily expressed in practical forms of love toward people. Whoever truly loves God cannot fail to love the one whom God greatly loves: the person He created.
