And the crowd that went before and those who followed were crying out and saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the Highest!”
The people loudly glorify Jesus, crying out, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” where “Hosanna” means “save, we beg,” and the expression “Son of David” is an openly messianic title, pointing to the expected Savior from David’s line. The words “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord” testify that the people recognize Him as the One sent by God, and the cry “Hosanna in the highest” expresses the unity of heaven and earth in praise, because God’s salvation comes down among people. This scene is a solemn shout of peace and joy, in which the people, even without fully understanding the coming path of the cross, prophetically proclaim Jesus’ messianic kingship, in accordance with the words of Psalm 118:25–26.
