And they brought the donkey and the colt, threw their garments on them, and Jesus sat on them.
The disciples bring the donkey and the colt, and they place their garments on them as a sign of honor and respect. Jesus’ sitting on those garments symbolizes the receiving of the King of peace without worldly splendor. This episode shows both the disciples’ devotion, as they place what they have into the Lord’s service, and Jesus’ humility, as he accepts even the smallest gift as an expression of great love. By this same action, as was said in the previous verse, the prophetic word is fulfilled: “Your King is gentle, seated on a donkey” (Zech. 9:9), showing that the kingdom of peace is established by gentleness, not by force.
