And leaving them, he went out of the city and went to Bethany, and spent the night there.
Jesus, leaving Jerusalem, goes to Bethany, a small village where he often found rest, far from noise and disputes. This step is symbolic: he departs from the city in whose heart he had cleansed the Temple, yet whose leaders rejected him. Bethany becomes a place of peace and rest, in contrast to Jerusalem’s blindness. Lazarus also lived in Bethany, a symbol of resurrection. Jesus’ night of rest prepares for his prophetic actions the next day. This verse shows the human side of Christ—the need for solitude and peace—yet also the deep spiritual meaning, when God leaves the unbelieving city and dwells in the place where he is received.
