The people of Jerusalem, seeing Jesus’ wondrous entry and hearing about His works, call Him “a prophet,” recognizing Him as a person sent by God, yet still not fully understanding His divine identity. This statement shows the first stage of human faith: to acknowledge Christ as a teacher and a doer of mighty works. Yet in truth He is not only a prophet, but the promised Messiah whom the prophets had proclaimed. That He is from Nazareth, a humble origin by worldly measure, highlights the lowly character of God’s saving plan, because salvation comes not with glory, but with meekness. In this episode the people confess part of the truth, and that confession becomes a bridge toward recognizing Jesus’ divinity, when human amazement is to be replaced by faith.
