And they were offended because of him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his homeland and in his house.”
This verse sums up the very essence of Jesus’ rejection in Nazareth. The residents “took offense at Him,” that is, they pushed Him out of their hearts not because of sins, but precisely because He was someone familiar to them. They could not accept that, in their view, an ordinary person could appear with divine power. Jesus’ reply—“a prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own house”—became a well-known saying. He emphasizes that people often do not value those whom they know too well by outward appearance. All this shows that faith requires a humble, open heart to see God’s presence even in an environment that seems too predictable. The people of Nazareth saw Jesus, but sadly they did not truly recognize Him.
