And he came to his hometown and was teaching them in their synagogue, so that they were amazed and said, “Where did he get this wisdom and this miracle-working power?”
This passage describes Jesus’ return to His hometown, Nazareth. He goes to the place where people had known Him since childhood as the carpenter’s son. But when He begins to teach in the synagogue, the wisdom and powerful impact of His words produce amazement among the people. Yet this is not merely astonished admiration. Unable to reconcile their long-held ideas about Jesus as an ordinary man with His present power, they begin to question skeptically, “Where did He get this?” They recognize the power of the word, but they do not recognize Jesus as a Teacher who has come from God. This passage shows that when there is prejudice in the heart, even the truth spoken by God can be rejected. In His homeland, people measured Him by human standards and missed the salvation set before them. This is a warning that spiritual realities must be received not with worldly judgments, but with faith and an open heart.
