Matthew 13:4

"now, the sower went out to sow. And as he was sowing, some seeds fell along the roadside, and the birds of the sky came and ate them."

Jesus presents a sower who goes out to sow, an image that was familiar and understandable to people. The seeds he sows fall in different places, and some of them fall beside the road. The road, as we know, is hard and packed ground where the seeds cannot penetrate into the soil. For that reason they remain on the surface, and the birds easily come and eat them. This picture shows that some seeds do not have an opportunity to grow, because they are lost immediately. Jesus will explain this parable to his disciples later, but even here he already hints that not all seeds produce the same result.
