In this passage the names of the twelve apostles continue to be listed. First, Simon the Canaanite is mentioned. Because of the presence of the nickname “Canaanite,” some have supposed that he was originally from Canaan (the land of Canaan) or from the city of Cana. Judas Iscariot is known as the disciple who betrayed Jesus. As we will see in the later chapters, he betrays Jesus by handing him over to the authorities in exchange for thirty pieces of silver. This episode becomes a central event in the story of Jesus’ crucifixion, and Judas is remembered as the betrayer and traitorous disciple. These two names are also mentioned among the twelve apostles, from which it follows that within the group of Jesus’ apostles, those who were with him from the beginning could become entangled in God’s plan in different ways, as happened in Judas’ case.
