Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
In this saying, Jesus presents one of the truths of spiritual life: that true life and wisdom can be found only through self-sacrifice and devotion. “Finding one’s life” refers to those who focus on their own benefit, security, and comfort, directing their life according to their own will. Such an approach, according to Jesus, can lead to spiritual loss, because it places personal desires above God. “Losing one’s life” means to devote oneself completely to Jesus and to renounce personal interests for the sake of His will and His way. This requires the believer to sacrifice his life and plans, trusting in God’s will, and as a result he will find true life and eternal peace. This saying emphasizes that only by being wholly devoted to God is it possible to find a true and valuable life.
