For I came to set a son against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

This does not mean that Jesus promotes hatred; rather, he shows that the path of faith can include sacrifices, including severe tension in family bonds. Jesus’ words call us to put God first, which means choosing God’s will, very often contrary to the desires or expectations of one’s loved ones. Full faith and devotion to God may sometimes require difficult decisions, yet they carry deep and eternal significance.
