Jesus called the twelve disciples to himself and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every sickness.
This verse points to a new stage in Jesus’ ministry, where He passes His authority on to the disciples, making them not only listeners but co-workers in the work of God’s kingdom. Having authority over unclean spirits and healing diseases shows that their mission is aimed at a person’s complete liberation, both spiritually and physically. In this way Christ confirms that the work of the kingdom continues through those sent by Him, and that their power comes not from their own ability, but from the authority given by the Lord.
